"ABC"s of South America
Argentina, Brazil,
and the Cataracts
10-days / 8-nights. Daily Departures
The
most famous and fabulous cities of the two biggest and best known
countries of South America – and the cataracts that come between them,
the world-famous Iguassu Falls, the widest,
most spectacular falls in the world. And yet, the two cities and two countries are not at all alike.
Rio
has the most stupendous natural beauty of any city in the world. The beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon and Leme nestled between towering urban
mountains.
Buenos
Aires
has wide boulevards, more European and wider than
Paris
’. They’re as different as Samba and Tango, as different as
Portuguese and Spanish. The
only thing
Brazil
and
Argentina
have in common is
Iguassu
Falls
,
which straddles both countries and which we visit from both sides.
1st DAY
USA /
RIO DE JANEIRO
,
BRAZIL
“Flying down to
Rio
” that’s the magic that movies are made of – and this tour. Fly to the world’s capital city of fun,
Rio de Janeiro
.
2nd DAY –
RIO DE JANEIRO
Your local host is at the airport to assist you in your transfer to
the hotel. Balance of the day
at leisure. With many
vacations you have to decide, “Should we go to the beach and relax? Or “Should we go to a city to explore, sightsee and discover?” You’re in
Rio
– where you can easily do both with just a hop into a taxi or the new
and marvelous air-conditioned metro.
3rd DAY –
RIO DE JANEIRO
:
CORCOVADO
AND SUGAR LOAF
Beautiful cities are either situated in the mountains or by the shore
–
Rio
, the city of unparalleled natural beauty, has the best of both –
dazzling beaches nestled between sea and mountains.
Rio
has more than just incomparable natural beauty it has a climate, a zest
for living where every day is carnival. And it’s got history and culture. Today’s visits include the beaches, the world’s international
playgrounds of Ipanema, Copacabana and Leblon. You’ll sing their praises – along with “The Girl from Ipanema”.
Rio
is indeed blessed – literally. It’s
even got the gigantic statue of Christ the Redeemer – the symbol of
Rio
– gracing the city from the
peak
of
Corcovado
. Many cities have one
symbol,
Rio
has two – the second of which is Sugar Loaf Mountain, whose cable-car ascent is as
thrilling as the views from its summit. (B/L)
4th & 5th DAYS
– ENJOY
RIO
!
The time in
Rio
is unplanned, but there are many optional tours available. A
great option is a journey along the ocean roads to the fishing
village
of
Itacuruca
; here you’ll embark on a Saveiro (schooner)
for a daylong cruise to the tropical islands in the
Sepetiba
Bay
. (B & B)
6th DAY –
IGUASSU
FALLS
Fly to
Iguassu
and transfer to your hotel before heading out to see the falls.
Iguassu
is twice as wide as
Niagara Falls
, and is the widest falls in the world.
Buenos Aires
. (B)
7th DAY –
IGUASSU
FALLS
BUENOS AIRES
,
ARGENTINA
Visit the Falls and cross into
Argentina
and drive to majestic Devil’s Throat, where the cascading and thundering water rush from a semi circle, creating thousands of rainbows. Fly to Argentina’s capital and transfer to your selected hotel. Buenos Aires has even “out- Europeaned” Paris. Buenos Aires is a city of music, opera at the world famous Teatro Colon, and it’s got its very own beat, the sexy,
sultry tango. The rest of the day is free. (B)
8th DAY –
BUENOS AIRES
The morning tour of
Buenos Aires
visits the Central Plaza de Mayo with the Casa Rosada. America has the White House, Buenos Aires has the palace-like Casa Rosada,
the “Pink House”, where Evita Peron
rallied the masses from the balcony – the same balcony on which Madonna
“played the palace” as Evita in the movie. Buenos Aires, not Paris, has the world’s widest avenue, the Avenida 9 de Julio. And it’s got a definite chic Italian feel, too. With a large Italian population. (B)
9th DAY
BUENOS AIRES (& TANGO SHOW)
The entire day is free; optional adventures include a journey along
the
Pan American Highway
into the pampas to a Gaucho Fiesta , be “pampa-ed”
on all the beef you can eat on an estancia. Or learn the tango, and then try it out in the evening, as we have
dinner and see a show of voluptuous tango dancing at La Ventana.

Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital
is the true illustration of Argentines spice for life.
The city's flavor is exemplified
profoundly through its people, culture, energy and most notably
its love for fun and food. Argentines are extremely friendly by
nature and will gladly welcome you to their city that they so
fiercely take pride in.
With nearly half of the country's
entire population calling Buenos Aires home, the city is no
doubt lively and pulsating with modern attitudes mixed with days
gone by. The melting pot of Buenos Aires has been compared to
that of New York. When Europeans sailed overseas in search of
the land of the free many chose the temperate Buenos Aires over
the Big Apple. For this reason alone, the city has a distinctive
European, cosmopolitan feel to it. The diversity of its people
highlighted by its art, entertainment and most notably its food
is what draws people from around the globe year after year.
Food is as much a part of the
city as tango and Teatro Colon. Of course it is the beef that
Argentines are most famous for and Buenos Aires is certainly no
exception. Visit any parrilla in the city and get your slab of
char grilled beef served up with hefty portions of fried
potatoes and green salad. Top off your beef fest with a tasty
Argentine wine. Whether you go for traditional Argentine fare or
something a little closer to home, you will leave the table with
your tummy happily full.
Plaza de Mayo, once the center of
it all, houses the city's most impressive colonial buildings
including Cabildo, Catedral Metropoltana and Piramide de Mayo.
Although the pulse of the city has moved, Plaza de Mayo remains
a must see. It reflects the days of Buenos Aires at its best
with a hint of the city's belle époque.
Teatro Colon, one of the finest
opera houses in the world, 156 museums, 140 parks and many
pedestrian shopping streets are also components of Buenos Aires'
appeal. In addition, every Sunday you will find a variety of
antique fairs and flea markets to wander around in. And of
course a visit to Buenos Aires is not complete without
witnessing the symbol of its passion, the tango.
Visit Buenos Aires and experience
the passion, the pride and the pulse of Argentina. Some say it
has already seen its hey day, others believe it's just heating
up, go discover it for yourself...
